What Downtown Chandler Gives You on an Ordinary Saturday

Why I keep sending people to Downtown Chandler
I'm Amy Richardson with Savvy Realty Group, and I live in Ahwatukee. When someone tells me they love the mountain and the trails but miss having a downtown to walk around, I point them to Chandler.
I worked in Chandler for 12 years, and I have been involved with ICAN, Improving Chandler Area Neighborhoods, for more than ten years, including time on its board. So this isn't a drive-by recommendation. Here is what a normal Saturday there looks like, and what I would check before you plan around any of it.
Saturday morning at the farmers market
The Downtown Chandler Farmers Market runs every Saturday at the West and East Ramadas of Dr. A.J. Chandler Park. From October through May it is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. From June through September the Summer Market runs from 7 to 11 a.m., which tells you something about summer here. The market says it goes on no matter the weather, and dogs are welcome on a leash.
If you are deciding between Chandler and Ahwatukee, go on a Saturday and walk the market before you decide anything else. It tells you more about how a place feels than a listing photo will.
An evening plan: the Chandler Center for the Arts
The Chandler Center for the Arts is downtown at 250 N. Arizona Avenue, on the northwest corner of Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue. It is run through a partnership of the City of Chandler, the nonprofit Chandler Cultural Foundation and Chandler Unified School District. I'm not going to guess at what is on stage this month, so check the Center's calendar and pick a night.
The Tumbleweed Tree in December
Chandler lights a Christmas tree made of tumbleweeds in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park every year. The city's own history says the first one was finished on November 27, 1957. The idea came from a Chandler resident, Earle Barnum, who remembered a community tree built from pine branches in Elkhart, Indiana. Pine was hard to come by here, so the town used tumbleweeds.
The city says the tree averages about 33 feet tall and has burned seven times since 1957, which is the kind of detail locals will happily tell you. Visit Chandler lists the 2026 tree lighting for Saturday, December 5, with activities in the park from 4:30 to 9 p.m. The tree is lit after the Parade of Lights. Times can shift from year to year, so confirm on the city's page the week of.
What this means if you are choosing between Chandler and Ahwatukee
Ahwatukee has South Mountain at the back door and a lot of established neighborhoods. It does not have one walkable downtown the way Chandler does. If a downtown matters to you, say so early, because it changes which area makes sense. If you would rather have the trails and the quiet, Ahwatukee is the answer. I would rather tell you that up front than sell you the wrong one.
My Ahwatukee, Chandler and Gilbert comparison goes through how the three differ, and relocating to Ahwatukee covers the other side. I'm not putting prices or neighborhood ranges here, because I haven't verified current numbers for the streets around downtown, and I would rather leave them out than guess. If you want real numbers for a specific street, ask me.
Check the details before you go
Hours, dates and programs change. The sources below are the ones I used. Open them the week you plan to go, and you will be working from what the market, the Center and the city are saying now, not from what I wrote in October.
