Ahwatukee Finally Has the Fire Station It Needed, and It's Unlike Anything Phoenix Has Built Before

July 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Ahwatukee

The new building on Chandler Boulevard

If you have driven Chandler Boulevard near 19th Avenue lately, you have probably noticed the new building across from Upper Canyon. That is Phoenix Fire Station 74, and it is the most significant public-safety addition western Ahwatukee has received. I'm Amy Richardson with Savvy Realty Group, and I live here, so I paid attention.

It officially opened on May 30, 2026, and what was unveiled that day is genuinely impressive.

The basics

Fire Station 74 is a 13,000-square-foot facility on 7.5 acres along Chandler Boulevard near 19th Avenue. It has been operating since March 2026 and is Ahwatukee's fourth fire station and the first built to serve the western end of the community. It is staffed with 23 firefighters and equipped with a fire engine, a rescue vehicle and a rescue helicopter.

Phoenix's first helipad, and what it means for South Mountain

The detail that caught my attention is that Station 74 has the first helicopter landing pad in the history of the Phoenix Fire Department. Fire Chief Mike Duran III said at the opening ceremony that the helipad lets a patient from a mountain rescue be brought straight to a waiting ambulance for faster transport to a hospital.

That is a real change for anyone who hikes South Mountain. Before Station 74, a technical rescue on the mountain needed assistance from the Chandler Fire Department, a longer response from a neighboring city. Now Phoenix firefighters respond directly, and the helicopter can shorten the time between an emergency on the trail and a hospital. The station is also equipped for technical rescues, trench collapses and high-angle rescues, built for the terrain that defines this community.

Response times

Councilman Kevin Robinson said at the opening: "Currently, response times are averaging around 10 minutes. What this station will do is reduce that by at least five to six minutes, down to four or four and a half."

For the neighborhoods nearby, including Club West, Promontory, Foothills Reserve and the incoming Upper Canyon community, that is infrastructure that directly affects how quickly help arrives. These are the city's stated goals for the station, and I would treat them as that until the numbers come in.

Who made it happen

The opening ceremony brought out a long list of officials, which says something about how long this was needed. Mayor Kate Gallego, U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton, state legislators, Fire Chief Duran, the city manager, the police chief and Councilman Kevin Robinson and Councilwoman Laura Pastor all attended. According to the Ahwatukee Foothills News, Rep. Stanton secured a $1 million federal grant toward the project. It was a city-wide investment, and the result of years of community advocacy.

Why it matters if you are buying

I want to be straightforward about this, because it is relevant to anyone buying in this part of Ahwatukee. Emergency response time is something buyers do not always think about until they need it. A ten-minute average in the western end of the community was a real gap, given how much this end has grown.

Station 74 was built with growth in mind, including Upper Canyon, which will bring a large number of new homes and apartments over the next few years. For buyers choosing between an established Ahwatukee neighborhood and Upper Canyon, knowing that a staffed station is operating nearby is a useful data point. It is one of the pieces of infrastructure being built alongside the community rather than after it. For the full picture of the new community, see what Upper Canyon actually is.
